Shot of the Day #273: Curious confections

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

One of the advantages of having a crew out in Tokyo...they usually bring back some cool shit. Some of it are wacky, irrevrant toys and bric-a-brac that will likely collect dust and be relegated to the crap cubbard (although the Lego-esque John Maclaine I got a few years back there served as a great good luck charm when I had to present my pitch for WRONG TURN 2). Then you have the (barely) edibles, like fish-eye gum or seaweed flavored chocolate. But one candy that ALWAYS comes back, much to the joy of our dept year in and out, is the Green Tea Kit Kat. Why this isnt available everywhere is beyond me, but damn if it ain't gooood.

Shot of the Day #272: The Long Walk

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

It's 11:20 and Im pacing.

2 months since our ka-tet has been apart, and this long hallway in the Virgin America terminal at LAX is the last thing that separates us from a mass amount of hugs and kisses. Right now, it couldn't feel any longer. But I've waited this long, what's another 4-5 minutes....?

Already this week has been fraught with drama at work, with one of my workplace heroes being shit-canned by the man for, as they say in HOT FUZZ "The Greater Good". I could use some familial smiles right now. Please?

Shot of the Day #271: LightDance

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

On Santa Monica Blvd., driving from rehearsals and off to a "secret screening" (sorry, I'd be shot for disclosing, but let's just saying Im driving fast not because Im late, but because I've got Cineboner), when I noticed how a streak in my window was warping the light shining through the glass, giving it an almost "Video flare" look (Film flares tend to streak across the frame horizontally, where HD and video flares go vertically). When people walked in front of the cars in front of mine, it created this dance of colors across my windshield, which was trance-like. Actually, it was pretty beautiful, almost like a deleted scene from FANTASIA, although here the music it was popping in-sync to was AUSTRIAN DEATH MACHINE. NNNEEEAAGGGHHHH!!!

Shot of the Day #269: Smog Sux

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

Ah, a beautiful day in Sunny California. Nothing like getting your car Smog Checked to really appreciate what little clean air we have left here. Funny too, as I was driving up the 405 North, I noticed this ugly, grey cloud hovering low amongst the buildings along Olympic and Sawtelle. The sight made we wince, another reminder of why i can't wait to get the fudge outta here.

L.A., i love ya but you stink.

Shot of the Day #268: Mr. Combs Sat Here

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

Tonight was going to be a real treat. We had heard that Stuart Gordon and Jeffrey Combs were going to be going back to the live theater (that's where both had started their illustrious careers) for a one-man show about Edgar Allen Poe, which sounded like a project you can just tell would be special in it's own dark way. Thankfully, the limited engagement at the Steve Allen Theater proved to successful that they extended it....and then extend again...and again. Now the show is set to continue well into October, but when we all found a night to hit up the S.A.T., it was time for some NEVERMORE...

This is the chair that sat under a dim blue (moon)light on the quaint stage before us, and as the theater filled, we all sat there in anticipation of a master actor of both stage and screen grace us with a fully fleshed Poe, retelling his famous poems and short stories as well as, between swigs of Rye Whiskey, lament on his final days of woe and poverty, pining for his lost loved ones, before finally fading away himself. Being that close to Combs in his Zone, tearing through the words of the famed Macabre author as if playing to the cheap seats (which all of these were, at only 10 bucks...WHAT A DEAL!), was such an experience, and even if I was fighting a numb ass (yeah, they WERE cheap seats!) and having only slept about an hour the night before, his presence was captivating. THIS is acting, diving into a character head first, to the point where I actually believed Combs as Poe was truly drunk on-stage as he almost dives off it to chase a ghost. Being such a huge fan of his since RE-ANIMATOR & FROM BEYOND, and later in THE FRIGHTENERS amongst other genre films and TV he's done, it felt like we were watching history being made, or just that...he was playing, right to me. At one point I swore he looked me right in the eye when he read from The Tell Tale Heart, and it sent a shiver down my spine, an electricity of creative spark connecting us for that moment. Sparse yet spellbinding, Nevermore was the best way to spend a Friday night for any genre fan.

I beg you all, before it's gone and if you're in Los Angeles, you NEED to hear the raven quote...NEVERMORE...

Shot of the Day #267: Boo, dude!

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

This was a looooong time coming...

It's 11:50pm at the Arclight Hollywood, where a special midnight screening of Oren Peli's PARANORMAL ACTIVITY is about to begin. I've been a staunch supporter of the film for almost 2 YEARS now, since seeing it at a CAA screening back in january 08 where it left me with a severe case of heebie jeebies (having to leave the light on both in the car driving home and in the bedroom), as well as claw marks from some unnamed assistant who sat next to me while we screamed and gasped every time they would cut to the shot of the bedroom for another night of "spectral motion". Simple yet effective, PA was a film that blew away Slamdance audiences and quickly got bought up by Dreamworks and & Paramount for both a small release of the original and a spiffy new remake (which was a bad idea thankfully dropped by the studio when the original film supposedly tested through the roof). But then....nothing. Green and I had copies of the early screener, with some early versions of the endings (supposedly Oren had been working on multiple climaxes, each one better than the next) that we would show friends to spook them out, but other than some small screenings here and there, little was said about PA...

...until now.

Seems Paramount decided to go Full Tilt Boogie with PA, marketing it in a unique, "word-of-mouth meets the Twitter age" method that might just prove both innovative and profitable, god willing. By showing the film regionally, near college campuses and other "buzz worthy" areas, the hopes that word will spread that the film is no joke (it's not) and more folks will "demand" it to be played in their area will allow the studio to intelligently roll out the release in markets it knows there is a demand, not just dump it on 1000 screens and hope for the best. Very SMRT Paramount, i hope it pays off.

But we're here, ready to be scared (and see the new "Spielberg Ending"), and look! Free Popcorn? Another plus! This is gonna be a fun night getting a good ole' case of the willies. Can't wait.

So, do your part, DEMAND to see PARANORMAL ACTIVITY in theaters near you! You owe yourself a good scare, no?

Congrats Oren, and my condolences to the families involved....wooo haahahahaha.

BOO!

Shot of the Day #266: The Stone Lion of Misery.

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

I never really come down to this section of Culver City, right near Sony studios. I should, since there's good places to eat and the movie theater here aint bad, but I rarely do. Tonight however, after sifting though my business cards at work to update my address book, I happened upon a free coupon card for Chipotle, a burrito chain, that I got in a gift bag at Comicon 09. Sweet, free dinner! So I made my way over to Washington ave and before I walked in, I noticed this jovial statue in front of the multiplex, dancing in suspended animation as some water fountains lazily spurt around it. A family was standing in front of it, a father, mother and young boy (maybe 1? I can't tell these days) and from behind POV, I nearly had an out-of-body experience, as if that was US standing there. Made me miss my family so so much, miss having that complete feeling wherever we went, missed seeing things fresh through his new eyes, like stone fucking lions surrounded by water missles. I got very depressed right here, and the free burrito did not help actually.

Thanks Stone Lion...asshole.

Shot of the Day #265: Monkeys & Zombies

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

At the Four Seasons about to meet an actor for a role in the film, kind of excited because I dig this guy's work.
I REALLY do not belong here, and stick out like a Winger fan at a Slayer show. Well, maybe a Slayer fan at a Winger show is more like it. But I'm waiting here in the lounge as various people come and go, and this old-money Beverly Hills zombie plops down at the bar, snaps her withered fingers to the barkeep for a phone and then commands the room with her raspy, smoke-ravaged voice to the other line (and I make NONE OF THIS UP):

"Are you the Monkey man? Ok, let's talk Monkeys Honey..."

(pause)

"Oh come on! 2 monkeys are that much? Ill play a monkey myself then! 750 is too much for monkeys!" SLAM!

Yes, folks, only in Hollywood.

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

Speaking of the rowdy undead (bad segway I know), but also got to see ZOMBIELAND tonight at a media screening. All I will say is....WOW. I haven't had that much fun in the theater in a LONG time, maybe even more than THE HANGOVER. Fucking fantastic, and over time, might even surpass SHAUN OF THE DEAD of the ZomCom subgenre. I dont want to say too much more, only that ive been grinning all night like a kid, and can't wait to see it again and again and again....YOU MUST SEE THIS MOVIE. ALSO: Best Cameo EVER?

Shot of the Day #264: Sushi!!!!!

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

Sushi, it's an art form.

So many places in LA for decent to decadent sushi, but one of the best is KatSu-Ya, which is where we took FrightFest UK Organizer (and all around "Dahhhhling") Paul McEvoy, who was in from Toronto for a few days before going off to FantasticFest, which is this week (and so pissed Im not going, oh well...maybe next year). Paul's never had sushi before, so we HAD to take him to what could be the best raw fish in town next to Jumbo's Clown Room (wait, that might be the WORST fish in town, scratch that). Luckily we got in before the rush and got to have some truly exquisite dishes, some of the chef's specialties that I haven't even tried....

Crunchy rice and Tuna? WOW.

Seared Albacore w/ Crispy Onions? DAMN.

Creamy Rock Shrimp Tempura? MORE PLEASE!

Plus, it was cool to see Dr. Horrible himself, Neil Patrick Harris, sitting behind us, gobbling away as well. A day after hosting The Emmys (which he did an AWESOME job with, BTW) you'd be hungry too!

Shot of the Day #263: Side-view Sunset 'Splosion

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

Driving back from a major errands day, I noticed that the sun in my side view mirror was so bright and vibrant, it almost looked like a mushroom cloud off in the horizon, the blast quickly reaching our viscinity like in T2 or WATCHMEN. Very stunning to look at (while trying to drive) but also cryptic and a little spooky. Im sure when a mushroom cloud fills anyone's eyeline, there is a moment where they go "Wow, that's really beautiful"....before their flesh is whisked off their bodies like paper, of course.

Shot of the Day #262: The S'mores Pit

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

One of the advantages to Green having a house is the backyard, where this killer "fire pit" table resides. It's a perfect hangout lil' nook, with xmas lights on the trees and the random Possum that will walk by or even chill out. It's Saturday, our writing day and while we started later than usual, the promise of firing up the pit (after one hell of a steak Adam grilled for Rileah and myself, good show sir) once the sun went down was a great goal to get to. So with the moon out, the marshmellows, graham crackers and chocolate came too and here we are acting like 10 year old cub scouts, making a total mess. So worth it. Bur seriously, who created this creative confection?? Brilliant combo!

Whoever created the S'more needs a Nobel, stat.

OK, more writing, then Guitar Hero Metallica for nitecap. Sweet.

Shot of the Day #261: Midnight with The Muppets

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

Who would have thought, in Hollywood on a Friday night, that the hottest ticket in town would be a midnight screening of The Muppet Movie? Not me, but then again, it's Hollywood, baby.

A few of us decided at the last moment to check it out tonight, thinking it would likely be JUST us, and as it turns out, we weren't the only ones planning on going! The line was down the block and the place was mostly full by the time the movie started, and I forgot how meta-great this film is. That it constantly breaks the 4th wall (referring to the audience, whipping out the script in scenes, etc) is testament to Jim Henson never playing down to kids and even playing up to Adults, which is probably why The Muppets have endured over 40 years and numerous generations of kids and their parents.

What a great night. So glad we went.

Shot of the Day #260: That's some killer eye-talian

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

What you see here is the infamous spot where Robert Blake shot his wife in the parking lot of Vitello's Italian Restaurant, where i went to pick up food tonight for Green's last-second, first screening (for me at least) of his new flick. It's been years since I've been here, when we used to live down the street (when that whole Robert Blake thing happened) so I forgot how good the food was. They even still have the "Robert Blake Special" which was on the menu before he unloaded lead into his lover's body, which is funny actually. Worth going to to dine even if blood wasn't spilled outside....

But yeah, here you go kids, some actual Hollywood Babylon shit right here....

Joe

PS: The movie? WOW. Just....WOW. I'm bias, of course, but....um....Im kinda speechless. You have NO idea.

Shot of the Day #259: Doppelgangers

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

As I walked past Frank Meyer's desk, I noticed a somewhat familiar face on a CD jewel box, which promptly stopped me in my tracks.

"Is that-?"

Frank smiles. "I know right? Totally looks like Eugene, but it's just some dude who sent me a CD!"

The Eugene in question is none other than our own Eugene Morton, who works for our dept in various creative capacities and is NOT the artist on the cover. That man is actually D.Black, the album titled "Ali'Yah". But of course we had to take this shot...very spooky how similar they look here. Spooky.
(No I didn't mean that as a raci-oh forget it.)

Slow day for the SOTD, I agree.

Shot of the Day #258: "Game onnn..."

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

I confess: I'm not a hockey fan. Correction: Not a big live sports fan, in general. No particular reason, I just don't make much of an effort to go catch a game and all the traditions/hassles that come with it. Hell, most of those annoyances are the reason I dont go to big shows often either, but since I was never much of a sports aficinado to begin with...well, you wont see me in line for season passes to the Lakers anytime soon (although the rare time I do go to a game makes it all the more special). Tonight was an exception...

Brian Slagel, the head cheese from Metal Blade, has been inviting me to come with the MB posse to a Kings game for a year now, and for one reason or another I haven't had a chance to go, but finally the stars alligned and here I am in the Metal Blade Booth at the Staples center for the pre-season game against Detroit. It was strange to see the place at 1/3 capacity, but I guess that's usual for a pre-seasoner. A highlight, however, was when the Pee Wee league got some time on the ice, seen below.

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

Confession 2: The kids put on a better show.

Thanks to Brian, Kelli, Vincent & the Metal Blade family for the chance to feel like red-blooded American for a night! Go Kings! Kings, right? Yeah...um, WOO!

Shot of the Day #257: Beware the New Bev

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

Out with the gang for Paul Davis' BEWARE THE MOON screening at the New Bev, right after AWIL played Now, Ive seen the movie about 10 times in the last month, not counting the hundreds of times Ive seen clips as we edited the shorts, but we wanted to come out and support Paul, a super chap who really made te definitive doc on the "Ultimate Monster Movie". There was a great, full crowd, totally sold out, and hell, they even showed the 4th DoucheBros. short! So it's been twice in less than a year that my fugly mug has graced the New Bev silver screen...I'd say that's pretty frikkin' cool. The crowd seemed to dig the whole night, watching the endless energy of Max Landis (John's son, of course) as he bounded from the stage to his seat and all over the new Bev like Bugs Bunny on meth....clearly a very excited guy.

From this pic you can see the silver mane of the famed FX maestro Rick Baker talking to Max outside the New Bev. Wow I have a lot of these shots.

Oh, new Body Count came out today! This was a fun one, hope you like it! EBOLA!!!

Here's me on the New Bev screen...what a maroon.

Shot of the Day #256: Quiche Sunday FAIL

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

Sunday. Writing. Boards. Various work. Need breakfast. NOW.

There's a Marie Callendar's down the block that we've never gone to before, and for good reason; those types of places are fucking junk food with a slightly higher class count than a Denny's (but not much). So, or course I decided, why not try it once? So between shot listing, I went to the restaurant for a late breakfast, which upon walking in was teeming with elderly people and boisenberry pies freshly made, the smell overbearing when you walk in (or was that smell the old ladies?). I just wanted something breakfast-like and filling so I can go back to my day with little interruption, and while I was here I thought I'd catch up on some Fangoria issues too. What a combo huh? Part of me was against this outing...maybe this will suck ass and ruin my day AND probably be way over-priced? Fuck it, it's breakfast, how hard can it be to fuck that up huh?

I ended up picking the ham and cheese Quiche, which ended up being a huge mistake. The filling inside was like a slightly denser consistency than the upchuck in BAD TASTE, and Im assuming slightly less flavorful that that intergalactic vomit they were all chugging. The cheese and ham looked like they were just stuffed in later on and the whole thing looked like a Brunch Holocaust. Seriously...worst. Quiche. EVER. Blargh.

Why didn't I listen to my gut? Now said stomach is suffering. Idiot. Well, at least I got to read up on some cool flicks in Fango....

Listening to the audiobook to Bret Easton Ellis' THE INFORMERS so i can watch the movie next. Is it me, or is there NOTHING in this book? Literally empty. Oh, but with Vampies. Hmm.

Shot of the Day #255: Wall of Stalker Shame?

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

Writing Day in the Valley w/ Green after helping Miller move to his new hole in Burbank (a pretty effortless affair, unlike OUR moving days, yeesh), and we took a walk to clear our heads a bit, get some fresh air. Walking around his 'hood, which used to be ours a few years back, one can notice that not one house looks the same; each one a different (and many times, ugly) exercise in style and excess...which is a stark contrast to the complexes I grew up in. All the houses in the area of Port Jefferson Station were either "Style #1" or "Style #2", and while there'd be variations and alterations made over the years (our house got a few makeovers itself), but for the most part, they all had the same basic style and structure.

Around here, it seems every house has it's own unique look and style, a "slash o' personality" added to every address, man times with a foreign taste to its look. I'm guessing it's because if you think of all the entertainment money that's gone through these properties, so many people who have taken Hollywood's money and made their "mark", that everyone with that kind of money would have an excuse to make their houses their own. So as we walk down the streets, brainstorming and bouncing ideas back and forth, we notice one of the houses has a fence completely covered with hand-made signs that have been stapled to the property. At first we thought it was a memorial of sorts, the kind you see at car crash sites or houses that just lost a child (or like in Union Square in NYC post-9/11, still fresh in my mind), but when we got closer to the signs, it was a much darker message.

Seems that whoever lives in the house with this fence has been employing the use of a 24 hour a day camera system, which was perched above the signs at the front of the alley, looming down at us as we silently gawked at the abrasive signage covering the fence. Words like "Peeper" and "Stalker" were motifs on many of the signs, accusing the person with the camera of supposedly being quite the lookie-loo. Why are the neighbors doing this? Is this person some form of reclusive child molester? I mean, is having the camera alone enough for such a public outcry? We didn't know all the facts, but damn if it wasn't an eye-opener. Funny too, as we walked past the house, an androgynous-looking figure (with hair and face that smacked Phil Spector, adding to the creep value) suddenly comes out of the house in question and FOLLOWS us for a few houses before turning around again...so he/she MUST have seen that we were loitering outside thanks to their infamous cameras. Shiver.

So strange. Ah, Saturday.

Shot of the Day #254: Refractions and reflections

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge (you'll want to on this one).

A few weeks back my brother asked me for my address (again); last time he asked that I got FALLOUT 3 in my mailbox a few weeks later, so while he was cryptic on the contents, I was excited to see what would arrive.

A package was waiting for me at my door today, and it wasn't shaped like a video game. Instead, upon opening the "SE7EN head in a box" sized cardboard package up, I discovered something else. Something far more special.

What you see above is my father's childhood still camera, one he bought when he was just a kid. See the reciept? That's the original one from the store, dated 1951. Holy shit. I guess the family cleaning out some of Dad's bric-a-brac and found this relic, thinking I would enjoy it even just for nostalgic purposes. Opening it up with a snap, seeing the old-fashioned contraption unfold and expand into a working camera, wondering what images my father captured with this camera, wondering if it would ever work again and what kind of images would appear if I took a shot....so many possibilities, so many unanswered questions now that he's gone. Ill only have to assume it brought him great joy and bent a lot of light through it's lens.

Especially now, with the advent of the digital shot, from high end SLR cameras to iphones, the days of REAL photos being born of these camera, ones to collect, cherish and reminisce, are long gone in favor the easy, quick solutuon; digital shots that can be stored in a hard drive, but you can't hold it, you can't feel it in your hands, smell the chemicals still on the paper. Having just lost gb's gb's of visual memories because of a stupid, surprise hard drive crash, it made me miss the process of photography all the more. Photos stay with you, even if in shoeboxes or albums. This camera of my father's was a cruel reminder of why I miss photo albums and can barely tolerate the advent of iphoto and the "digital print".

I wonder if someday, when I'm gone, someone will give Remy my old DVX100 camera just how I got this...a mysterious box and a lot of memories captured though it's glass. Boy, does THAT camera have stories to tell...

Speaking of memories. I can't believe it's been 8 years since 9/11. Time seems to have warped by, so many moments, so many events, experiences, highs and lows. I know we're supposed to move on, but no matter what day this date falls on, it's something not easily shed in my thoughts and memories. Just like a picture.

Shot of the Day #253: Toilet Humor

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

Taking a wicked piss in the deli we're eating at between casting sessions. Today's the first official day of casting on KNIGHTS, and I love this part of the process. So many varied choices with the roles we have in this, and so glad to be working again with Nancy Nayor Battino, who also cast WRONG TURN 2 (and FROZEN), and she's got a great handle on all the talent out there. Just having all these guys in the room, many of whom Im a fan of already. Sadly, I can't shoot any of this stuff so my SOTD couldnt totally reflect the scene out of respect for those up for the parts, but wish me luck as casting can really make or break this film. Vert excited!!!

But when I leave the John post-piss, I notice this peculiar "Mens" sign. Looks like one of the PUPPET MASTER creations, and more creepy than funny. Also, why was there a KALIFORNIA poster over the toilet? Did Brad and Juliette (who dated during the film) meet here or fuck in this stall or somethin' ? This is a strange town.

Shot of the Day #252: Ramen, there is no substitute.

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

So in keeping with my somewhat newly-instated diet (trying to cut down and get in shape for the various projects after seeing my flabby ass on that big Empire screen and now all over the internets, see below) I decided to go with a "Soup Dinner" and stopped by a Ramen shop on Sawtelle for a nice big bowl of Tokyo Memories. Seriously, just looking at this bowl filled with noodles, porkfat, a half of a hard boiled egg and that savory broth, it literally transported me back to Shubuya when we were there for many a G4 shoot (which Im coordinating a crew going next week and kinda wish i was joining them). So, catching up on my metal magazines and slurping a great hot bowl of ramen....life aint bad right this moment.

Also, now you can check out the Road To FrightFest shorts from this year, entitled American Douchebags in London, online! Enjoy the laughs, the fears, the tears....the nude scene! This was another amazing collaboration with the ArieScope team and thankfully there will be more to come! I just gotta get in shape....and get a haircut. Stupid Movie....

Shot of the Day #251: BIG FAN, small "premiere"

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

At the Silent Theater for a special, "intimate" premiere release of Patton's new film BIG FAN, which was written and directed by Robert Siegel, the screenwriter of THE WRESTLER. In short, the film is like the scrappy little brother to Aronofsky's fantastic 2008 film, with similar themes and tone, as well as a 70's verite style that gives a great impression of Staten Island depression. But Patton....well, I'm bias because Im a friend, but fuck me was he really great in this film. Might be his best work to date as an actor, and should be proud of it. Killer work, man.

But here at the premiere, the media is crowded around this little swatch of 'Big Fan' backdrop where such celebs as Samm Levine, Doug Benson, Andy Richter and the man of the hour himself, who you can see on the left of the frame. So funny to see a mini version of the press line in the back of the theater, kinda cute.

SHot of the Day #250: Nuff said

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

Kinda day off, still have a LOT to do. No time for love Doka Jonze...

But for some sick reason (mainly because Im a big fan of CRANK & CRANK 2) I wanted to check out GAMER so Posehn and Sark and myself went to the shitty Sherman Oaks Arclight to see it and frankly, all stupidity aside, it was a fun diversion, and what a perfect time to watch it, right?

Big fan of Gerard Butler (who was good)...not so much Ludicris (who sucked) but the "teabagging" moment is worth the netflix alone when it comes out. Seems to "get" the gaming world the best of all the games movies out there.

OK back to work...

Shot of the Day #249: At The Drive In...'s Projection Booth

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

If two guys go to the drive-in together in one car, is it considered gay? Even if its technically a location scout?

Here's inside the projection booth of the Vineland Drive In, one of the last remaining working drive-ins in America, which is truly sad and depressing. We're scouting for a secret project and decided after speaking with the nice gent who let us into the booth (which has 4 separate projectors that accommodate all 4 screens) we decided to stay and check out HALLOWEEN 2, which I already pretty much despised (Sorry, Rob) but thought "Well, at least I get to watch Green say 'Hey, it wasnt bad!'"

Thankfully, he agreed with me. Couldn't get the hole in the popcorn trick to work though, damn.

Shot of the Day #248: Mr. Green's Halloween Hood

Shot with iphone (using PanoLab), click to enlarge.

So it's not even 5 days into September and Green 'n Rileah are already putting up Halloween decor around their house. God bless 'em but I wont even be thinking of what Im going to WEAR this year till Oct 30th let alone worry about decorating NOW. Jesus. But you gotta admire it, walking into their place already gives you the sense of October warmth, not from the nip outside (at least how I remember it as a kid on the east coast) but that fun welcoming of the holiday and all the traditions that come with it. I want candy corn so bad.

So Green's got some killer decorations, including a set of "horror houses", miniature scaled models of houses from HALLOWEEN, FRIDAY THE 13TH, TEXAS CHAINSAW & NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, complete with a mini-movie-maniac to stand proudly before each scary abode. The detail was right down to the last blood-drop, which was really cool, and using this new "PanoLab" app for the iphone (yes, they have one of those for that), I made a crude little Panorama of the scene. How rad would this 'hood be if you have THESE guys living across from one another?

Shot of the Day #247: Big Colors, Big News

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

Half day at work before the Labor Day weekend, much obliged Comcast. My jetlag has NOT played nice; struggling to stay away at 3pm at work while screening videos, then waking up at 4am, bright eyed and bushy-tailed? No thank you, I'm done. So hopefully this extended weekend will be a productive one (gotta do boards, finish other script deadline, G4 work, etc) but also one where I can chiggity-check myself and my sleep patterns.

Had to drop off the rental jacket from the shorts today (which SHOULD be up today or maybe Monday, stay tuned) and when i walked into this costume rental place on Fairfax, what struck me was this draping fabric that is hovering from the ceiling. I have no clue why, but it had me transfixed to the point that the person helping me had to "wake me up" from my trance to facilitate my return order. I think I'm seriously in a daze.

Oh, and somewhat "big" news: Looks like news on the movie got out there, courtesty of a FrightFest video that shows Landis "outing" me and THE KNIGHTS OF BADASSDOM. When it got on Twitter, the bitch spread like Chicken Pox....Here's a few places it got picked up on immediately, thanks all for the kind words! I hope to make you proud.

Shot of the Day #246: Silicone Heaven

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

First big meeting/tour with the FX house we're really hoping does the flick. They were tops on my short list as Ive been a big fan of their for years, and one of my "mentors" kept saying "you HAVE to let them do your monsters, man! No question!" So luckily said god-like director (who has worked with them many times before) introduced me to the owners of the shop and we quickly hit it off. Today is a general meeting to see if the ideas jive with everyone and see if we can work it out, and damn if I'm not in fucking childhood heaven. Everywhere around me are creatures encased in glass (and many free of these bounds), beautifully grotesque works of art around every corner. It's a monster movie fan's wet dream, and right now, my thighs are wicked moist.

The meeting went GREAT and crossing fingers the deal can be made. This felt like a HUGE step for us, and now momentum is finally picking up. Just found out next week we can start casting more directly AND we might shoot somewhere VERY cool. Onward!!!

But I could seriously hang out here forever. Bliss.

Shot of the Day #245: They make these?!?!?

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

Back to the office, actually excited to be here. LOTS to catch up on but when I walk into my bosses office, this peculiar foam-based item was sitting on his desk. What could this be, pray tell?

Yes, NERF makes LARP-esque swords now. Oh, it's ON.

Man today couldn't have been busier. Jetlag, damn thee.

Shot of the Day #244: FrightFestX Day 4: Heading West

Shot with iphone, click to enlarge.

Waiting for our ride to the airport after a very emotional final night at The Phoenix. I hate goodbyes (does anyone actually admit to liking them?) so i usually try to race through the crowd, stick my hands up and wave furiously, hoping that "blanket greeting" will do the trick and high-tail it out of there. But with so many great people to bid farewell for another year, it was more difficult than usual. But got back to the hotel around 4, packed and tried to snooze a bit before we left.

Downstairs, Ti West, who we hung out with quite a bit here and became friends with, was already down, seemingly passed out next to a huge set of chess pieces. Dude looked comfortable. Out came the camera.

Oh....did I mention I left my passport back at the hotel? AGAIN?? Im not going into gory details, but its just confirmation that if you have that 'wait, am I forgetting something?' feeling....GO WITH IT. Im never taking travel advice from anyone ever again. After this, I shouldn't be allowed to go ANYWHERE without one of those touristy "fanny packs" stapled to my side. Ugh. REALLY didn't need the stress, especially for the last day. But it all worked out (with amazing, hollywood block-buster timing) and 13 hours later, we're home in Los Angeles, looking for the first good burrito place we wan find stat.

Till next year, FrightFest.
