Shot(s?) of the Day #1: Happy New Year!
Hey all,
...so this whole "One shot a day" thing is already gonna be tough. Now that I have this mode programmed into my mental/biological "hard drive", its all Im thinking about. Sure, the romance will peter out once things get really busy, but it still doesn't solve the dilemma of..."Which of these pictures is the best representative of the day at this moment that I want to share?" This morning, or at least the first twilight moments of the first day of the new year, I wobbily captured the exact moment when The Jonas Brothers, Ryan "I've looked at your AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON T-shirt in the elevator" Seacrest and a host of other IMPORTANT people count down on the TV "...2!....1!!...HAPPY NE-"

...Not the best framing, lighting or even focus, but it was the first shot of the new year, and just felt....right. Guess that's the point of these improv-type shots and the rules I'm setting up for myself. This was a moment that certainly captured the feeling of the holiday. Bri and I are celebrating 10 years together this year (WOW! Time flies!), and its been an amazing, life-defining adventure for us both. I'm so blessed to have her in my life, especially on the dawn of an even more earth-quaking event just round the bend, that we get to do it together with smiles and laughter and kisses....so this moment in time felt right to capture in a 2-D digital time capsule.
Man, that's some mushy shit up there. Mmm hmm.
It's been a banner year for my darling love and my blossoming family, and right before the ball dropped we both mentioned how this time last year, one of us said "...and who knows? We might have a bun in the oven by then!" and CUT TO: NOW...
...as Dick Clark valliantly struggled through his frequent check-in's on the Annual telecast from Times Square (which was supposedly 2 degrees out, factoring in the wind chill....I'm actually glad to be enduring the "blistering" 50 degree winters here for once) Bri was standing next to the TV and I blurted "wait, right there!" and saw another moment, one that instantly burned a bold title card in my head:
"A Picture speaks 1000 words..."

I dunno who said it and too lazy to type W-I-K-I-.-C-O-M (even though that configuration of letters and characters was more time consuming) but this moment in time to me furiously scribbled volumes. What that belly represents and what it means for both of our lives forever, or what Dick on screen for so many of us growing up and having almost 30 memories of this very moment, being together with the TV Icon and a frigid gathering of New Yorkers as they rang in the new year, and how we've all changed too. Dick gives us hope (TWSS....sorry I had to) and while it was tough to watch him post-stroke, his presence warmed us, showed us that there is a LOT of life ahead of us, and to cherish every moment. So the frame being built on these two halves, the image of the "newborn" year on the left and the symbol of the past on the right...I dunno, again, it just felt right.
I promise not to be so indecisive tomorrow (shit! What the hell am i gonna shoot tomorrow???) but with this internal struggle going on between choosing the two shots, well...I just had to share and i guess it's good I'm keeping the creative spunk squirting. Ew.
This is gonna take some getting used to...but I guess that's another discipline I need to work on with what's coming up in the next few months. Also, let me mention that I don't plan on explicating every photo when I put something up...I guess you just caught me in a very introspective moment as of this writing.
So, there you go. One day down. Feels good.
Wait...if I put two pics up today, does that mean i get to take tomorrow off?
Have a great holiday everyone and here's to a bright new day in 09!
Staying Scary,
Joe
