Shot of the Day 12.214: Re-Creunion

Shot with iPhone & Camera+, click to enlarge.

Most of the crew from last season (and a few new additions) for our first official production meeting for HOLLISTON, season 2. There's an electricity in the air. It's also hot as balls. Added to the moment.

Great to see many faces again, getting psyched to rock again...less than a month to go!

Shot of the Day 12.213: CRACK! (Or...Joey's First Dodgers Game)

Shot with iPhone & Camera+, click to enlarge.

View from our seats for my first Dodgers game, with a little help from iPhone zoom. Captured this moment as Mack actually cracked his bat in half, the sound unlike anything I'd heard before; sounded like a bone breaking over a loudspeaker.

An amazing night, especially being able to have seats behind Tommy Lasorta (Cool!) & Magic Johnson (Wow!!), seeing Larry King (Boffo!!!) walking around in a Members Only jacket with the collar flipped up (Er...) and of course being in the Dugout Club eating & drinking like kings (Free buffet?! Unlimited Dodger Dogs!!!!). The team lost to Arizona but the experience was one to remember. Thanks Scott & Mark!

Shot of the Day 12.212: Budding Buddies...

Shot with iPhone & Camera+, click to enlarge.

One thing my son has definitely adopted from his old man's old habits was the ability to just start up a conversation and make friends in any situation. I remember my mother telling me that I would proudly exclaim "The whole world is my friend!". This was before the whole world showed me over the course of 30 years that they are in fact NOT my friend, or even want to be, but at least Rem tries. Here he made a friend at a 50's retro-clothing store while Mom tried on cool dresses. Immediately he engaged, began playing Angry Birds with the girl and they had a hoot of a time. So nice to see actual, physical, innocent interactions at play. I miss it.

Now if you'll excuse me I have to go be inwardly isolated & cynical on the interwebs...

Shot of the Day 12.211: AM Social

Shot with iPhone & Camera+, click to enlarge.

Only in Los Angeles would there be a 10am Ice Cream Social. NOT complaining, since it was at our favorite indulgent establishment, Scoops Westside. What was nice was that they had a puppet show and music/dancing for the kids and Remy got along with this felt-y friend very quickly.

My feeling is it's never too early for a scoop of Scoops.

Shot of the Day 12.210: Midnight OVERBOARD

Shot with iPhone & CameraBag, click to enlarge.

Bri and I decided to hit up a midnight show of the Kurt 'N Goldie "Classic", OVERBOARD, at the NuArt...clearly it was a capacity crowd. The owner was um, delighted, to inform us that the 6 other people in the theater culminated in OVERBOARD being the WORST attended Midnight movie in NuArt history. Woo hoo!

The highlight of the night was when the owner, who was actually SHOCKED that we didn't lose a bet when we bought tickets at the door, asked the 8 people in the theater what they wanted to have screened. A bunch of good ones were thrown out (GOONIES, GARP, etc) but the homeless-looking guy who came in with two shopping bags of bric-a-brac loudly said "LEGEND OF BILLIE JEAN!". I wouldn't disagree, Hobo Hal!

Shot with iPhone & CameraBag, click to enlarge.

Cleaning out our old VW Golf to sell and found a bucket of blood used for some of the G4 shorts last year.

What, are you THAT surprised I have a bucket of blood in my trunk? Come on now...

Shot of the Day 12.208: Wall of Sadface

Shot with iPhone, click to enlarge.

Picking up Banzai's pills (she's doing nicely, thanks for asking) at the Vet, caught a glimpse of this wall of missing dogs and cats, missing family members and best friends, and it only made me hug our little buddy even tighter. I hope they all find their homes.

Heartbreak on display.

Shot of the Day 12.207: Curbside Deposit

Shot with iPhone, click to enlarge.

Had to park on the street, was immediately reminded of my New Yawk days seeing a bottle of someone's liquid waste placed on the curb. Classy, people, reallll classy. 10 bucks it was a cab driver. Sorry, but having WATCHED cab drivers in NYC pull over on the regular to leave a yellow bottle of wee-wee for someone else to deal with (usually a poor waste management worker making minimum wage), I can spot the signs.

But who's worse: the guy who pees in a bottle and leaves it out in public or the dude who takes a picture of said pee bottle? Discuss.

Ew.

Shot of the Day 12.206: Vertigo Vu

Shot with iPhone & CameraBag, click to enlarge.

Another hot day at the office, and I'm not talking about the "intimate" moments. It's just ball-sweaty sweltering, to be so crass, with actors dropping left and right. But Laura's hair gave me some serious Deja Vu from one of the more famous  compositions from Hitchcock's VERTIGO.

*Snap*! Got it.

Now...someone throw me an icewater, quick! MELTING!!!

Shot of the Day 12.204: Bobscratch Goldfarb

Shot with iPhone & Camera+, click to enlarge.

So psyched to see one of my favorite comics (and film directors) Bobcat Goldthwait, who was performing in Ventura tonight. Green and I drove an hour out to see him in a small comedy club; by small, I mean, we HAD to be in the front row because there weren't many people there for a 7pm show (sunlight was still streaming out from behind the performers, strange). But it was an awesome set, seeing Bobcat tear into his material and those around us. Thankfully, we were spared much insult (but he did call me "attractive", which was nice). Great night for sure.

Also, if you haven't seen WORLD'S GREATEST DAD or GOD BLESS AMERICA (the last two films Bobcat wrote and directed)...do so, IMMEDIATELY!!!

Shot of the Day 12.203: Red-Light district

Shot with iPhone & Camera+, click to enlarge.

What a strange day, with the Aurora, CO shootings in the minds and hearts of the world, how movie-going will likely change, etc. That is what scares me the most...the fear people will have going out to the movies. Going to the movies WAS the getaway, now people are going to get away from getting away to hide in their homes with their content? Not just from a business sense but one of an entertainer, that concerns me.

So as I was driving home from a meeting, I decided to drive to my local AMC theater in Century City (the one with the cool HAL-like parking lights, seen above) and bought two kids tickets to the movies. Why? Just so they can enjoy a movie in the theater, the way it was meant to be seen, encouraging them that going out to a theater and enjoying a film is a positive experience, not one I pray will instill nervousness and added security. I hope they enjoyed ICE AGE 4...might have been a bad choice but hey, they picked it! Freedom for Moviegoing!

My heart goes out to all the victims of the Aurora shooting. A sad day indeed that was supposed to be a joyous welcoming of a summer event movie, now haunted forever.

Shot of the Day 12.201: Adam 'n Terrence

Shot with iPhone & Camera+, click to enlarge.

Here's Green and his assistant Terrance (who he met on HATCHET 3 on-set and hired for HOLLISTON) having an intimate moment between rehearsal takes where T (or "Donut") as we affectionately call him, plays every other role while we run lines in the office. He's a hoot AND a hell of a worker, always making sure we're hydrated, fed and even physically training us....that part sucks but I know it'll help for when we shoot.

For now, enjoy this mini-bromance moment.

Shot of the Day 12.200: Saturated Sunset

Shot with iPhone, click to enlarge.

Crazy enough, there's no filter on this photo, taken outside the Ariescope office as we're rehearsing, now pulling nights to keep cool since the office is usually hitting 100 degrees in the afternoon. I don't know how it feels so colorful and saturated, I just take it and barely ask questions.

Great shot for the 200th day.

Who skeeted the arts all over this tire? Strangely alluring find around the corner from the office, pre-hearsal.

Shot of the Day 12.198: Poolside reflections

Shot with iPhone & Camera+, click to enlarge.

Our final day in San Diego, but instead of posting another Cosplayer or shots of the KITT car or He-Man figures I dearly wanted but couldn't afford, I thought I'd leave the Comic-Con experience on a more intimate note. With all work obligations done, the family and I decided to take advantage of the pool in the hotel. Anyone who knows me well enough knows that seeing me with my shirt off, let alone IN A POOL, is about as rare as a Loch Ness photo or the chance of a SPAWN reboot, but it was a good weekend, I was happy, so I said "Fuck it". It was so nice to end the weekend in "cool down" mode, letting the rest of the geeks leave and clog the 5North while we bask at the pool. Smart move, since as we left for home around 9pm, our trip back was 2 hours shorter than last year when we left at 5pm. That's strategy my friends!

So enjoy one of my favorite shots of the year already. Just a nice moment captured.

See you next year Comic-Con...maybe, just maybe, KOB will be out by then. Not holding my breath.

Shot of the Day 12.197: Showdown at Autograph Pavillion

Shot with iPhone & CameraBag, click to enlarge.

Here's HATCHET 3 director B.J. Mcdonnell & "Rictor Crowley" (Stuntman & HATCHET 2 victim Rick McCalum) doing a serious stink-eye staredown as the HATCHET 3 autograph signing winds down, with a mock-terrified FX wizard Rob Pendegraft looks on. It's small detailed moments like these that I cherish Comic-Con, that people can just walk around in an, i dunno...Swamp Monster costume, and people barely bat an eyelash. I love it.

Shot with iPhone & Camera+, click to enlarge.

Standing across the street from the Con of the Dead party that FEARnet & Dark Sky FIlms put on in honor of HOLLISTON & HATCHET 3 as a Zombie Walk shuffled by. Funny how very little noticed...ah, Comic-Con.

Happy Friday the 13th! And nary a Voorhees in sight (but there's Kane Hodder!)

Shot of the Day 12.195: The Holliston Panel

Shot with iPhone & Camera+, click to enlarge.

Here's my view from Room 25ABC for the HOLLISTON panel. Even though we found out that due to the later hour, security was NOT informed of any panels going on and turned away about 100 people (so I heard), we still had a great turnout. There was some great questions, some funny stories and it was of course, WAY too short to fit in everything we wanted to say.

Actually, the panel is online, check it out below:

Thanks so much for the lovely Alison Haislip for moderating and to everyone who showed up and came out to the panel. Now, to drink! Shit...I'm SO last year, how am I gonna get into any parties?!

Shot of the Day 12.194: It has begun...

Shot with iPhone & Camera+, click to enlarge.

Back to San Diego. Strange this year, especially after the "KoB Tour" last time I was here, but diving in, much like these people who have been waiting in line just to get into the once-exclusive "Preview Night", which is now just another day of nerd-madness. Frakkin' nuts. Had to run off to do a tech check for the HOLLISTON panel (tomorrow night in room 25abc at 8:30! See you there!!) and passed the line, seeing the frothing fans, clamoring to get onto the main hall and throw money at their childhoods.

Here we go...

Shot of the Day 12.193: Woody for Horror

Shot with iPhone & CameraBag, click to enlarge.

Raced to Universal after a great meeting (more on that VERY soon...I hope) to catch a preview screening of Scott Derrickson's SINISTER, written by my buddy C. Robert Cargill. GREAT movie, very effective and really scary at points. What's scarier is how much I related to the main character, a writer of true crime who pushes himself too far to get "the golden goose" of a story, which has it's own haunting ramifications. I don't want to give too much away, but as I walked out in a bit of a daze, pushing past Brett Ratner as I walked into the open air as Magic Hour hit in the Valley, and lock eyes on a familiar friend from my youth, Woody Woodpecker. I used to LOVE his cartoons, obsessed with them every morning before school (they usually ran around 7am before the bus came, prime cereal eating content) and had another retro moment similar to my E.T. pillow flashback. Between seeing Woody and being scared like a kid again with SINISTER, it was like dredging up my youth, kicking and screaming, and I was just welcoming it in.

Check out the trailer to this genuinely spooky and frightening trailer to SINISTER. Derrickson, Blum & Cargill might have a true hit on their hands.

Now...to pack for Comic-Con!

Shot of the Day 12.192: 100-Thread Memories

Shot with iPhone & CameraBag, Click to enlarge.

My mother in law Jan is in town for Comic-Con (How rad is that? Jan rules) and brought an old pillow case of Bri's. Not so strangely enough, its the very same pillow case I had as a kid. I fondly remember nights sleeping on this particular side, since the pillow case was actually double sided, the other being the thrilling climax where E.T and Elliot have they're goodbye moment and tears flow. As a kid, I opted for the covert E.T. because when you lay on the pillow in the right spot, the lean on the pillow from the weight of your noggin gives the appearance that our friendly alien is staring at you to sleep. To some, probably creepy. But I loved it. So seeing this pillow again reminded me of that time, a nice step back before bills and bullshit.

"I'll beee rriiigghhtt heeerreee...on yourrrr beedddd".
Shit, that's a little creepy.

Shot of the Day 12.191: Floor Power

Shot of with iPhone & Camera+, click to enlarge.

People ask me*, "Joseph**, where DO you find these wonderfully captured moments in your life to share with all of us***?" Well, dear web-surfer, here's your answer. Right under your feet usually, waiting for the elevator. This very project helps me force to find the shot, to keep my eyes working and view the world around me more acutely. If I have time, I try to snap it. So if I see a plastic flower on the ground in front of me waiting to use the elevator, before the "ding" is heard and the elevator door slides open, I gotta, to quote Vincent Vega.."Get the shot".  I can't promise Herb Ritts, Ansel Adams  or even Terry RIchardson (which, given my location, could happen more times than not...hey, there's Lindsey!), but its my life and that flower was asking for it.

Joe

* They Dont.

Shot of the Day 12.185: Loving Recreation

Shot with iPhone & Camera+, click to enlarge.

BLUES BROTHERS happened to be on HDNETmovies and, like almost all Landis films in this home, it stayed on. Since we passed the "soiled condom" gag, we felt like the film was benign enough for Remy to watch, mainly for the musical numbers. But he was blown away by the car chase, and luckily enough, we actually HAD Hot Wheels versions of both the Blue Brothers car and one of the old-school Chicago police cars. So for the next hour we sat there, extending the car chase/mass crash collision well past the climax of the film. Unfortunately our living room doesn't do Chicago's downtown streets much justice.

Just wonderful to share one of my favorite films with a new set of eyes...and ears, since we've been listening to the Blues Brothers albums I have ever since.

See You Next Wednesday,
