Shot of the Day 12.119: Compostable Mutations

What happens when a long render time, a flimsy "green" cop and a newly obtained butane lighter can create. Looks like what happens AFTER David Cronenberg drinks a smoothie.

Shot of the Day 12.118: David Slade, Man of the Canines

Shot with iPhone & Camera Bag, click to enlarge.

Went to a really cool gallery opening at Wildfire Studios (a GREAT Sound Mixing/design facility) tonight for one David Slade, photographer, director, fellow Anonymous Content rep mate. We've hung out a few times, he's a great guy but I'd always been a fan of his work; from his music videos to commercials and of course his films (HARD CANDY, 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, ECLIP-ok maybe not that but hey) so it was cool to see his still work. And better to see he's still not too proud to get on his knees to stoke his fanbase! Go Slade, GO!

You can check out some of his Photos HERE.

Shot of the Day 12.117: Reverse, Reflect, Ripple.

Shot with iPhone & Camera Bag, click to enlarge.

Which side is up? Is this a reflection? I honestly can't remember. That means something. Maybe it's that my life feels like its upside down at the moment, with the smallest raindrop making large ripples in the flow.

Sure, that works.

My current setup; one to edit, the other to render & compress, both tethered via network so I can seamlessly work on them both. I almost look like I know what I'm doing here! Now where is that PHANTOM OF PARADISE mask, it would go so well right now...

Shot of the Day 12.115: Rendering...

Shot with iPhone & Camera+, click to enlarge.

Have a render time on a video that is literally 3 hours, so gonna take the dog for the walk. Felt appropriate to see a snail slogging along at it's own pace on the walk. He's probably about 3% finished here.

Shot of the Day 12.114: Historical Hydration

Shot with iPhone & Camera Bag, click to enlarge.

Spent all weekend (and into this morning) absorbing the HBO JOHN ADAMS miniseries, which I bypassed when it aired but am completely absorbed by now. Actually woke up at 6am to get started on the day early enough so I could finish the 7-part series up. Really amazing series, one that shed new light on Mr. Adams and his contribution to the American Revolution and beyond, and Paul Giamatti is a force to be reckoned with as the title role. HIGHLY recommended.

Oh the waterbottle? I've been "rehydrating" myself after coming back to Chicago having consumed little H2O and my skin is paying the price...plus 3 of these suckers and I'll have flushed out my system by lunchtime.

Water is tits.

Shot of the Day 12.113: Sunday Morning Stacks

SHot with iPhone & Camera+, click to enlarge.

Woke up at 6am with the gnarliest craving for...pancakes. That warm, familiar feeling of home when you wake up on a SUnday morning to a fresh stack of carbs slathered in dairy & sugar. Sign me up. So here I am, 6:45am at an iHop...dining on Cinnabon (yes, THAT Cinnabon) pancakes. Holy fucking god, it's like waking up to Sunday morning sex. I could not recommend higher. What a filling way to start the day...I now need a nap.

Shot of the Day 12.112: (Mad)Balls on the Wall

SHot with iPhone & Infinicam, click to enlarge.

Working all day on Season 2, so much fun throwing ideas back and forth like a game of catch. In that case, many of the ideas we keep tossing to each other would best be personified by these lovely MADBALLS which Green got, another fastball down memory lane. I had them ALL...and most are still likely buried in my old family house's backyard, courtesy of my younger brothers.

I miss my old toys. I am not ashamed to say that.

Shot of the Day 12.111: Missin' Mom 'n Pops

Shot with iPhone & Camera+, click to enlarge.

In this strange time when in most cases you can cull up any type of media (movies, music, TV, games, etc) immediately at the push of a button or the bit of the torrent (which we do NOT condone here!), it's odd to find myself in a video store on a Friday night, just like the good ole days. I'm working on a project that needed the use of clips in it, so I'm scouring any/all video stores in town which led me to one of the last true video stores in Los Angeles, Santa Monica's VIDIOTS. I used to love coming in here and just peruse through the aisles of movie history, good, bad and otherwise...and if Im lucky I'd find a rare or obscure gem in the mix. Thankfully, I found every title I was looking for since most of them were NOT available online or streaming. Therein lies the rub. Some movies might NEVER make the switch over from DVD/VHS to digital, so many of the films in here might never be discovered. There's a lot of debate over the "death of film", especially in town lately, and never has the cloud hung lower than in this videostore, which feels like a "Soda Jerk" in historical terms, a place that will not stand the test of time and the current culture where everything is available NOW NOW NOW!

I think with the passing of the video stores, even the big conglomerates like Blockbuster and Hollywood, comes a shift in media consumption as well. In the past, one would rent a movie and the ticking clock would begin; if it was due in a week or tomorrow night, this deadline was always helpful to force you to consume the media in a prompt fashion, and many times having this pressure forced you to watch and even discover things you might not have wanted to watch before. Now with the advent of no late fee services like Netflix, streaming (netflix again) VOD on cable and iTunes, we can watch/listen/absorb whatever we want, whenever...which only means we might never get around to it because our lives are already filled with such mundanities as Facebook, Twitter, GetGlue, etc etc...and lets not start on our overpacked DVR's which have shows and movies languishing on there from 2 years ago! Having the Mom N Pop videos stores was more personable, you went in, talked to people, conversed about movies you loved or didn't, hell, maybe even waited around till that next new release came in to rent. There was something exciting and tangible about this process, one that, being in this video store which even smells like the 80's (must be the VHS tape moldering), makes me miss these Friday night traditions.

Hell, I'm just happy WRONG TURN 2 is in the horror section...we're still cool, Ma!

Shot of the Day 12.110: Memories at the Movies

Shot with iPhone & CameraBag, click to enlarge.

Walking to a late night (final) screening of Joseph Kahn's twisted & fun DETENTION in Burbank, which is more than a hop, skip and a jump away but I was glad to drive over, but what stopped me was this view, which was so strangely familiar. I immediately remembered at that moment; this was my first REAL view of Los Angeles when I came to the hallowed city in '99 for the first time to attend a friend's wedding. We went right from the airport to this Burbank AMC, which had a line around the block for the opening night of Doug Liman's ALSO twisted & fun GO (seeing a pattern here) which I was very excited for. Alas...we didn't get in, BUT hope sprung in the form of a Double Double from In N Out, which I had only heard of from afar. Needless to say, if you've ever had an In N Out burger, you know my night ended up A-OK. But just being in this area, knowing we were (kinda) in tinseltown, was an ELECTRIC feeling. The air felt warm and inviting on every inhale, the people so filled with energy and positive vibes (what a ruse that was) and just the whole notion of being HERE...it was an exciting night for sure.

But being back here 13 years, MANY movies and a LOT of life later, was a great way to put things into perspective, even if a LOT has changed about myself and the movie business I'm now working in, but this sight was all too familiar (just...a lot less people in line, which also says something).

I think if the '99 me saw into the future wormhole (OR...DETENTION style, spoiler!) and got to peek at the '12 me, I think he'd be pretty thrilled where things were headed. Might have also commented on my weight and hairline, to which I would have kicked him in the balls at 88 mph and sent him back in time. Jerk.

PS: See DETENTION!!!

Shot of the Day 12.107: THE STOWAWAY

Shot with iPhone & CameraBag, click to enlarge.

Back home, exhausted. Had a full day of work to tackle too, so between the flight and the workload, I was done and done....so much so that when I laid down at 5:30 for a quick 30 minute "eye rest", I woke up again at 8pm...which was when the screening of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK was at the Arclight! I missed it. WHAT a BUMMER.

However, my mood was lightened slightly with the discovery of one jelly donut in my bag from yesterday's Dunkin's run. Nothing like surprise sweets to save the day*. My taste buds were confused being in L.A. but enjoying one a Dunkin confection. Can taste buds have jetlag?

*Man, I shoot a lot of food. I think my eyes need a diet.

Shot of the Day 12.106: SARAH, GREEN & THE BEAN

Shot with iPhone & Camera+, click to enlarge.

Our final day in Chicago...we first hit a burger joint for "frozen custard" (um, yes), then the convention center downtown for C2E2 (which was good to look around a bit, nice to not be packed in so tight) which was where our panel for HOLLISTON was. Little did we know that we were the absolute LAST panel on the LAST day, so we expected 1-2 people. Shock to us, it was MUCH more attending and everyone seemed to enjoy the panel and clips we showed and stories we told. Glad we did it, being that it was the last stop on our "Holliston Road Trip", so good we ended in a geek-friendly area. Thanks to everyone who came out, both at Fear Fest AND C2E2, we really appreciated it!

After C2E2 (isnt that a droid from STAR WARS? Ill have to check with the expert), our driver Mike offered to take us to Lou Malnati's which I heard was the #1 place for such a wealth of cheese, sauce and dough. Sure enough, it was....oh it was...

But BEFORE we did that, Sarah (a Chicago native) INSISTED we check out "The Bean", which Green and I were unfamiliar. If you've seen the recent SOURCE CODE you remember it as the mirrored bean-shaped exhibit downtown, which in person was such a stunning sight, even if it did rain. Kinda reminded me of the space ship from FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR...and above is the view INSIDE the bean. Trippy huh?

Now we're back at the hotel, recovering from the deep-dish massacre (with pieces to spare! Hello Midnight Snack!!) and watching TV, keeping it low profile before the trip back. Great trip, all around.

Thank you Chi-town!!! You were truly windy!

Shot of the Day 12.105: TRULY WINNING

Shot with iPhone & CameraBag, click to enlarge.

One of the great things about the MuviCo theater we've been inhabiting since Thursday night for Chicago Fear Fest is the awesomely retro arcade, complete with quarter games & video stand up consoles. I miss dropping mad quarters on this shit. One game I never saw, Pop The Balloon, was enough fun for Elbert and I to be late for our own panel on producing film to actually drop 5 bucks to POP this sucker, leaving us with about 400+ tickets! I don't think I've ever won that many tickets in my life. Totally worth it!

Last night at FEAR FEST was a lot of fun; Got to finally see REC 3 (a more broad comedy-horror but still effective without the found footage gimmick running the show), A ROUSING response for THIRSTY (so much BIGGER than I expected!) and the crowd for HATCHET 2 was frothing at the mouth for the gore and good stories behind them. After we got to make a lot of new friends and hell, even dabble in a few drinking games. If tonight is gonna be anything like Friday's after-party (or bigger) I might as well start hydrating and taking advil now. Off to try to see JUAN OF THE DEAD....

Shot of the Day 12.104: BREAKFAST CALZONE ?!?

Shot with iPhone & infinicam, click to enlarge and eat.

...is the greatest invention since the wheel or the iPod. Why is this not a staple?! I have a feeling between dishes like this and the kind of DEEP dishing I'm craving by way of Chicago-style pizza, this weekend is not going to bode well for the belly.

Off for first day of FEAR FEST, which should be a gas. Everyone is so nice and accommodating and we're hoping for a good crowd, despite this being their first year AND competing against C2E2. Come out and "JOOOOIN USSSSS". For now, leave me alone I'm devouring this mean bastard. Mean DELICIOUS bastard, I should say.

Shot of the Day 12.103: HITCH 'N HOLLI

Shot with iPhone & CameraBag, click to enlarge.

At LAX with Green 'n Elbert for another Holliston-related event, this time to the windy city for the Chicago FearFest FIlm Festival, which is gonna be fun since we're not only showing the TV show but also my short THIRSTY and Green's HATCHET 2 (unrated print!). Then C2E2 (Chicago's Comic-Con, basically). Then home. Whew. Would be nice to sit still for a moment.

Wish us luck,

Shot of the Day 12.102: METAL MORTALITY

Shot with iPhone & CameraBag, click to enlarge.

At the Revolver Golden Gods Awards at L.A. Live with Green and Elbert. Watching the various new,old & other strange on-stage pairings (Trivium & Slipknot, Dee & Black Veil Brides, Slash & ALice...Manson & Johnny Depp?!) I learned two things:

1. I still love Metal.
2. Just not this new shit.

I've never gone to a live show and felt so OLD before. Not a fun evening confirming your own mortality.

Just as I internally bitch about not having internet on this flight, I see the 1-per-row cellular phone in the middle seat, reminding me how far we've come in technology and how seeing a phone in a plane was mind-blowing. I'm gonna go watch DIE HARD 2 now....

15 hour flight. Ugh. Can I phone this one in? Did I mention "Ugh"?

Shot of the Day 12.94: AN AMERICAN GIALLO

Shot with iPhone & infinicam, click to enlarge.

Yep, I'm somehow in Rome. Jetlagged like a mofo, I woke up at 3am, restless, and decided to hoof it around the city. There was an eerie calm about the streets so early in the morning, like a scene out of a Dario Argento Giallo. I even had a stranger stalking me for a good 20 minutes around the city till I lost him in the train station....or at least, I THINK I did.

Gonna be taking a lot of pictures, I can already tell. Here's my favorite of the morning....

This is going to be a strange trip.

Shot of the Day 12.92: TO LIVE AND FLY IN L.A.

Shot with iPhone & infinicam, click to enlarge.

Every time I use these laze-inducing automated walkways at L.A.X, I always dream of seeing John Turturro & William Petersen racing down the terminal in TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A. It's a comforting thought as I head out internationally.

Goodbye U.S...Ciao Rome!
