Shot of the Day 12.60: Hidden Heat

Shot with iPhone, click to enlarge.

I know this seems like a bit of an excuse, but I've been watching a LOT of films...you know..."research". I've ALWAYS considered viewing movies as a bit of homework, taking in the style, the tone, shot construction, etc...analyzing the "hows" and the "whys". I often take pictures of shots off the screen for reference too. Again...RESEARCH (right?).

Watching Michael Mann's epic soap opera HEAT last night, I noticed what looks to be a hidden message...I know it's more of a Frank Lloyd Wright design on the door, but that? To me? Yeah, that's the Silver Pictures logo on the door. Is this Mann's comment on modern (at the time) action films? Or am I just reading into a door too much? You decide...but that's another element of film I love. We both could be right. Or is it Wright?

Shot of the Day 12.58: At the Crime Scene

Shot with iPhone & Infinicam, click to enlarge.

At the Crime Scene Pictures office today going over the EVERLY script, great meeting. LOVE their poster collection; I'm going to put it in my contract I have to take their massive vintage FRENCH CONNECTION one-sheet (not pictured). Stunning collection...can't wait for the EVERLY poster to go up someday soon!

Shot of the Day 12.57: In the Hoop

Shot with iPhone & CameraBag, click to enlarge.

At weekend Birthday party #2 (Happy Birthday Kai!) and their dog Rosco was having a grand ole' time jumping through the hula hoop going after the tennis ball, which became the highlight of the party. That and the fantastic street tacos (I think I had 6 of them, oof. Gotta love cheat day!).

Now time to go home and bear the Oscars. Knowing THE ARTIST is gonna win everything, like it has since the first awards show, is taking some of the fun out of the night, but still a yearly tradition we can't miss.

But first...maybe one more taco...

Shot of the Day 12.56: Rainbow Connection

Shot with iPhone & CameraBag, click to enlarge.

Here's Remy (at the first of TWO birthday parties this weekend; kid is popular it seems) giving a Rainbow Pinata a good whackin'. First time I've ever seen a party Pinata explode with Slinkys and Seaweed. Not an uninteresting combo.

Happy Birthday Lucia!

Shot of the Day 12.55: Hazy Shade of Winter

Shot with iPhone, click to enlarge.

Unseasonably cold day, brrr.

Then again, it's February in Los Angeles, where its USUALLY unseasonably warm, so who am I to complain? But this foggy sun peeking through the trees instantly made me think of The Bangles & LESS THAN ZERO for some reason...even if there's not a junky playboy in sight anywhere with schmutz on his lips.

Found at 7:30am this morning on my walk. Looks like Clark dropped something on his way to work. I'm guessing there was no Kryptonite in this strain...

Shot the Day 2.52: Doug Loves Movies

Shot with iPhone & CameraBag, click to enlarge.

I was invited to be on one of my favorite comedian's podcast, Doug Benson's DOUG LOVES MOVIES, and aside from me freezing up and screwing up the game portion, it was a real blast. The above is to my right; Here is Doug checking answers, Kevin P from G4 mugging...and to be fair, on my other side, fellow panelists, Comedian Sean Jordan and illustrious doc filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, who Im a big fan of. I was surrounded by comedy.

You can listen to the podcast for free on iTunes HERE. And yes...I'm embarrassed I didn't get JOHNNY DANGEROUSLY, don't rub it in!

Shot of the Day 12.51: Coat Rack of the Future

Shot with iPhone, click to enlarge.

Cool, old-fashioned film projector in the lobby of TODD AO (where I'm doing some more ADR for HOLLISTON). Saw this and it actually dampened my mood, thinking in 5-10 years...this is just another piece of furniture. Not that I don't mind digital projection, but just thinking about all that history that has passed through it's reels, lenses and light. It just not the same.

Shot of the Day 12.50: Glass Half Bear

Shot with iPhone, click to enlarge.

After a LONG night, up again for a Sunday meeting with Bear, who is directing another project (no hints, sorry) and I'm lending my services. Exhausted, but seeing how excited Bear is is enough caffeine for me. Gonna be fun.

Shot with iPhone & CameraBag, click to enlarge.

Its almost midnight at ArieScope and the gang is "spot-checking" all the episodes to make sure we crossed all the i's and dotted the t's.

It's gonna be a LONG night. Thank god we can still laugh at the show.

Shot of The Day 12.48: Public Confessional

Shot with iPhone & CameraBag, click to enlarge.

...In Silverlake for Corri's production she puts together with the lovely Andy Fickman & Christine Lakin, WORST AUDITION EVER. Genius concept, really...actors getting up and recounting their horrifyingly hilarious tales of blown chances & (many times) body fluids. Lord knows I have plenty of those (on both sides of the table, actually). Painfully funny stuff and the crowd ate it up.

Really fun show, check it out!

Shot with iPhone & Infinicam, click to enlarge.

Walking to Century City AMC for a midnight show of GHOST RIDER, I noticed...they're not really doing much to promote JOHN CARTER are they?*

(NOTE: Sarcasm doesn't usually translate well on the Interwebs, so I have to sadly point it out)

Shot of The Day 12.46: Promo-licious

Shot with iPhone & Camera+, click to enlarge.

Here's a behind the scenes shot of the "Holliston Special" FEARnet and ArieScope's own Sarah Elbert put together to promote the show. So good seeing everyone again, it was like getting the band back together.

Cause we're on a mission from God...to make you chuckle.

I love soundstage sets.

Shot of The Day 12.44: Hella Trees

Shot with iPhone & Infinicam, click to enlarge.

I actually stopped my car to take this, the trees looming on this cloudy day felt so ominous, foreboding. My head is in a REALLY dark place, what gives? Fire and brimsone, cats and dogs, living together...(you fill in the rest).

It might be nothing, right?

I'm pretty proud of my "That's AWE-sum!" loop. I think I smell Ringtone!

Shot of The Day 12.40: Frunkin' Awesome

Shot with iPhone & Infinicam, click to enlarge.

Got invited to a special Tesla Motors event tonight in Hawthorne, at an enormous facility they build rockets in. Felt like an Apple presentation (with a little more rock swagger and greytones) as they unveiled the Model X, their SUV-esque vehicle that got the same kind of gasps I remember the iPhone getting when Steve Jobs pulled it out of his pocket. Pretty killer piece of machinery...and it has a "frunk" (figure that one out). Im sold. That is...when I have money to be sold to get one.

But for me it was seeing all of the Roadsters lined up in a special section (my "date" owns one so we got ushered to the front. Boo ya) which gave off this gleam of utter "Cool" Oh and being at a formal event severely underdressed...which, given I was wearing a Rammstein shirt, made it all the cooler I'd say.

Also: Stood next to Rick Rubin and Jon Favreau. Good company!

Thanks to Aaron for the hookup...what a night!

Shot of The Day 12.38: Stub (at) my toe

Shot with iPhone & Infinicam, click to enlarge.

Strangely, I find movie stubs on the ground all the time in L.A., especially our house. And of COURSE I have to look...Usually they're what's out this or the past few weeks, but this one caught me by surprise.

What is this movie?

After 10 seconds of Googling (Man, Sherlock Holmes would be out of job these days...) I found it. Oh, Bollywood.

Shot of The Day 12.37: Blank Canvas

Shot with iPhone & CameraBag, click to enlarge.

Beautiful sky emerges from a rainy morning. Seeing a blank billboard sign in Hollywood is like finding a 4-leaf clover or seeing Bigfoot walk past you on a hike. A rare sight you have to capture before it's gone. I'm sure there's an ad for a LAP BAND or EPISODE 1-3D on there by now.

Shot of The Day 12.35: Pandora of Post

Shot with iPhone & CameraBag, click to enlarge.

At Modern Film/Video right now, coloring the little "something special" we made for the Berlin Film Festival/Film Market. How quickly this all came together is pretty astounding and exciting, and sitting down with Eric, the same colorist who worked with Jimmy Cameron on that indie flick AVATAR...at least I knew anything I asked for wouldnt be as demanding. The facility was killer & watching Eric work was really inspiring, how raw footage has so much leeway in terms of a final "look" which we nailed down immediately.

In the end the project looked AMAZING and we all left ready to kick a schnitzel.

Shot with Luke Rivett's iPhone & CameraBag. Click to enlarge.

I didn't take the shot, but my best mate/producer Luke (who was integral in EVERLY's birth and development) sent it over. Can't believe I didn't go out and buy 10 of these, DAMMIT. But at least I have this picture. Wow.

Here's the article from VARIETY that snowballed...BIG thanks to everyone for the well wishes!

Let's do this. No More Games.
